Maya Lin and The Space Between: What is Missing?

Posted on October 13, 2010. Filed under: Art |

Maya Lin was at MIT on Oct 13 and Eric and I went to hear her.   I’m often cynical about art speakers and particularly about architecture speakers.   Also suspected that maybe she just got lucky once with the Vietnam Memorial.

Nope.  Even Eric said, “That didn’t stink” (constitutes high praise).  This felt like being in the presence of genius.  The work is varied and remarkable and creative and appropriate the to the spaces. And there is a lot of it.   As a speaker she is direct and confident and uses small words well.

Even pitched her pet cause (which is about slowing destruction of species) and that was ok too since it was consistent with everything else and used her gift to promote the cause.

What is missing?

She said,  “I’m interested in the space between things…the space where opposites meet.”  Me too at least from my limited point of view of design and construction..in design it’s about the edges of fields; in Collaborative Structures or Vela Systems its about connections between firms own robust internal systems…the space in between.

Rearrange the lights (in the satellite photos of cities)…for resource conservation is about land use.   Yeah! Even the finance mercenary (“hi I’m John and I like concrete”) connects.
